A new, 3-story, 30,000-sq. ft. simulated
flight training building at Hurlburt Field in panhandle Florida’s
Fort Walton Beach area—with a 0.1 design density and light
to heavy hazard areas—required a fire pump system to be installed
within an out-structure.
Stringent Corps of Engineers requirements stipulated a totally assembled
unit be installed. It had to be easily replaced within a matter of
hours, be readily available or quickly manufactured, and be serviceable.
Strict specifications, performance parameters and longevity expectations
had to be met.
Mike Brown, General Manager of Advanced Fire Protection Services,
Inc.—fire protection contractor for the project—recommended
a Patterson Pre-Pac® 6 x 5M skid-mounted prepackaged system. Through
first-hand experience, he believed Patterson to be the industry leader
in prompt delivery of standard fire pump systems. Also, he considered
the Patterson horizontal split case pump one of the most serviceable
in the industry, with parts availability in 24-48 hours.
The Pre-Pac system met all Corps of Engineers specifications for
the installation in the first submittal.
“Delivery of the Pre-Pac was made one day early. It was lifted
into place before construction was completed, but was also designed
to slide through double doors for later removal,” says Brown.
